I was in the third floor lounge of Columbia Hall. While I was in there, there were a few groups of people in study groups, and a few others who were alone doing work quietly with their laptops. When I was sitting there observing, I noticed some interesting patterns between each of the students:
Person One (female):
This person was here before I arrived in the lounge last night. She was alone with her laptop and her book bag. She seemed to be very focused on her schoolwork and did not take many breaks. The only breaks she seemed to have taken was to take sips of her water. She was there for the full 45 minutes I was there.
Person Two (male):
This person was studying with another girl at one of the tables. They seemed to have been going over something for their Psychology class and were having discussions while typing some things on the computer. They would frequently get off track and talk about other things but they seemed to have gotten their work done. They were there before I came into the lounge but left before I did. They seemed to be struggling with a few things but it seemed that working together had helped them both.
Person Three (female):
This girl did not appear to be working on anything school related. She was with a friend and they were talking about a lot of different things but kind of quietly as to not disturb the others. They were not in there for long before then they started to do some work but they didn't stay too long. They seemed to keep getting distracted though because they kept getting off topic.
Person Four (group of people):
This group of people were sitting in the chairs having a group discussion about a class they all had together. It sounded like they were doing a group project. This was a mixed group of boys and girls and they were very deep in discussion the whole time I was observing. They had brought snacks and drinks in there and they were they before I came in and even after I left. They were working hard and seemed to stay pretty focused.
While I observed everyone in the lounge, I discovered that everyone has very different studying habits. Some people need to study in the quiet, others need some noise to stay focused. I found however that most people go into the lounge to stay focused and to get their schoolwork done. With the exception of a handful of people, people worked and studied hard in the lounge. The data that I collected suggests to me that college students use the lounge for all sorts of things. It is a good place to come to focus because sometimes when they do work in their room it is very easy to get off task. Although the lounge is capable of causing people to get distracted because there are many people in there, the majority of the students go there to get their school work done and is always a good option to have.
